- Know whom you are calling. Learn a name in its revealed setting and reflect on its meaning.
- Choose a fitting name. Seeking forgiveness? Call upon Al-Ghafūr. Seeking provision? Call upon Ar-Razzāq.
- Ask sincerely. Praise Him, express your need, and ask in clear words. You may use a transmitted supplication or your own permissible wording.

About this numbered list: Sahih Muslim 2677a affirms the virtue of learning ninety-nine names but does not enumerate them. This familiar ordering follows Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 3507; the report containing the enumeration is graded weak there, and scholars differ over some individual names. Allāh’s names are not limited to ninety-nine. Use this as a study index, not a definitive list of authenticated names. English meanings are brief editorial glosses.
